Now more than ever, we need to revive ourselves...

Working in the conservation profession is hard on our hearts, minds and bodies. Compassion fatigue and burnout are common among us conservation professionals, and can undermine our conservation effectiveness. Research is finally validating our “eco-emotions” (e.g., feelings of eco-grief, eco-anger, climate change anxiety). Now more than ever, we need to revive ourselves. To help us and our conservation partners navigate the heavy emotional burden of our field, we need a coordinated effort to strengthen our knowledge, self-care and cultural norms towards a more nourishing conservation workspace.

Our Purpose
A working group within the Society for Conservation Biology dedicated to supporting professionals through heartbreak, grief, anxiety and other intense and draining emotions commonly experienced on the frontlines of conservation.

Our logo symbolizes renewal and interconnectedness between nature and conservationists, and how our passion and inspiration for our work as conservationists is sourced from navigating the challenges of environmental change and loss.
Our working group is guided by three primary objectives:

Develop our understanding of eco-emotions and their impact on us and our work, and strengthen our skills for emotional resilience.

Create support spaces for us by providing resources, funds, and facilitation to improve access to mental health practitioners and peer-support groups.

Normalize our emotional response in the conservation workplace to foster a culture of proactive emotional resilience.

To accomplish these objectives, our membership provided input for a comprehensive workplan which overviews the activities that our Committees will organize and implement. Click the button below to read the full plan.
